After stop-overs in Hong Kong and Singapore, I felt like I had gone backward into time. When we finally
arrived in Bali, I was immediately struck by the beauty of the people. I was very fortunate to meet Siti who was a beautiful middle-aged woman of high caste among the villagers. She translated and helped me find subjects for my portraits.
I remember seeing the Irving Penn photos taken in Africa and New Guinea. I loved the way the subjects
stood out from the backdrops. I found a fabric artist in Ubud who made the painted textile I used throughout
Bali. He was an American expatriate who had a bottle of Stoly and a pack of Camels always at hand. Even
at 10:00 AM. His studio of Balinese artists turned out beautiful designs that were shipped all over the world.
Away I went with my new backdrop rolled on a bamboo stick attached to the top of my car.
